Christmas in Rye 2026

Cobbled streets, inglenook fires, a Mapp and Lucia Christmas at Lamb House, a makers’ Christmas market and steam trains with Santa. Here is what is actually confirmed for Christmas in Rye this year, from the owners of a cottage four miles away in Camber.

Rye does Christmas quietly and well. The historic town of Rye in East Sussex is small enough to wander in an afternoon, its independent shops and medieval inns look their best on a dark December evening, and the empty winter beach at Camber Sands is ten minutes away. This guide lists the Christmas events we have checked against official listings, and says plainly where something is not yet confirmed.

Is there a Christmas market in Rye?

Yes. The Rye Creative Centre Christmas Market runs on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2026, from 10am to 4pm on both days, at the Creative Centre on New Road (TN31 7LS). More than twenty local makers sell hand-crafted gifts, and there is a festive café under the same roof run by Ground-Up Coffee. It is the closest thing Rye has to a traditional Christmas market, and a good place to find presents you will not see anywhere else. Rye’s regular weekly markets keep going through December too, so the cottage table can be stocked with local produce for Christmas.

Is the Rye Christmas Festival on this year?

Not as far as anyone knows yet. The Rye Christmas Festival is a one-day, volunteer-run event that used to fill the town centre with music, a Santa’s grotto and late shopping in early December. The organisers took a break in 2025, citing the cost of one-off events and the need for a bigger volunteer team, and said they hoped to return in 2026. As of mid October 2026 no date has been published. If that changes we will add it to our What’s On page, and the festival’s own website is the place to check.

A Mapp and Lucia Christmas at Lamb House

Lamb House on West Street, once home to Henry James and later E.F. Benson, is dressed for Christmas as Mallards, the home of Miss Mapp in Benson’s Mapp and Lucia novels, which he set in Rye under the name Tilling. It is open from 5 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, 11am to 4pm with last entry at 3.30pm, and closed on 9, 10, 16, 17, 24, 25 and 26 December. For the first time the house will also open over the Twixmas week, from 27 December to 3 January. No booking is needed: pay or show your National Trust card at visitor reception. There is no car park at the house, so park in town and walk up. Details are on the National Trust website.

St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival and carols

St Mary’s Church at the top of the town fills with decorated Christmas trees from 27 November. Last year the festival ran into early January with free admission. The church publishes its Advent and Christmas services nearer the time; last year Nine Lessons and Carols was held on the Sunday before Christmas at 6pm. Check the parish church website for this year’s times.

Mermaid Street, Rye. On a December afternoon the cobbles and the lit windows do all the decorating.

Christmas shopping in Rye

Rye is a rewarding small town for Christmas shopping because almost everything is independent. Enter through the medieval Landgate and work your way along the High Street and the side streets for bookshops, galleries, homeware and gift shops, then drop down to Strand Quay for the antiques warehouses, which are all under cover if the weather turns. The Thursday market on Rope Walk and the Wednesday farmers’ market on Strand Quay are good for local food and drink. Park at Gibbet Marsh or the Strand Quay car parks and walk up, because the citadel streets are steep and cobbled.

Where to eat and get warm

Book ahead for any December evening. The Mermaid Inn, rebuilt in 1420, has a giant inglenook fireplace and serves a festive menu. The Standard Inn is a restored fifteenth-century pub on The Mint with dogs welcome in the bar. Webbe’s at the Fish Café cooks Rye Bay fish, and Rye Bay scallops are in season through the winter. For a warm-up between shops, Knoops makes hot chocolate to order. Guests at Beachside Cottage also get membership of The Grapevine Champagne & Jazz Bar in Rye for the length of their stay, which makes a fine end to a Christmas shopping day.

Winter walks and the coast

The best antidote to a big lunch is the beach. From 1 October to 30 April the whole of Camber Sands is open to dogs, and on a still winter morning you may have miles of it to yourselves. Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is full of wintering wildfowl and waders, and the flat track to the river mouth is easy walking. Camber Castle, Henry VIII’s fort on the levels between Rye and the sea, is a crisp two-mile loop from Rye Harbour village. Our walks guide and dog walks guide have the routes.

Santa Specials on the steam railway

The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway runs its Santa Specials from 28 November to 24 December 2026, leaving New Romney at 9.30am, 11.10am, 12.50pm, 2.20pm and 4pm. The miniature steam train runs to Hythe and back, with a visit to Santa and his elves in the grotto, a magician while you wait, a gift for every child, seasonal refreshments and the model railway exhibition at New Romney. Tickets must be booked online in advance through the railway’s website, and popular times go early.
