Sailing boats moored at Rye Harbour under a blue sky

Easy-going & accessible days out

Some of the best of this coast is, happily, also the flattest. These outings suit anyone who prefers level ground, short distances, benches and a decent cup of tea, including wheelchair and mobility scooter users and pushchair pushers.

A note on the cottage first, so expectations are honest: Beachside Cottage’s bedrooms and family bathroom are upstairs, with a cloakroom WC on the ground floor. If stairs are a concern, do ask the booking team before reserving.

Who it suits

Older guests, anyone recovering from injury, wheelchair and mobility-scooter users, and families with buggies. The star choice below is famously good for limited mobility.

The beach, honestly assessed
Soft sand is hard work for wheels and the dunes are not especially wheel-friendly, but the Camber Welcome Centre (opened 2025) has a Changing Places facility, and at low tide the firm sand near the water rewards those who can manage the crossing with a little help. Ask at the coastal office (01797 225207) about current beach-access provision before setting expectations. The viewing spots by the Central car park still deliver sea air and the view.
Planning
The Sussex Wildlife Trust publishes a colour-coded access map of every Rye Harbour path (red means easy for wheelchairs all year). Pick one up at the Discovery Centre or download it before you travel.
Wheelchair-accessible taxi
The Rye Chauffeur runs a licensed wheelchair-accessible taxi seating up to six: 07512 124465. Pre-book, especially at weekends.
Blue badge
Blue badge parking is available near Strand Quay in Rye; taxis can drop at the top of the town so you wander down rather than up.

The star choice: Rye Harbour Beach Reserve

The ground is level and the long tarmac track through the Beach Reserve is ideal for wheelchairs, scooters and buggies. A short circular route takes in the river mouth and several bird hides, two of which are fully accessible, with others suitable for powered chairs and scooters. Benches along the way.

Rye’s citadel is cobbled and steep, but the Strand Quay level below it is rich pickings without a single hill.

The gentler harbour and bay cruises from Rye Harbour are well reviewed for accommodating less mobile passengers and wheelchair users; the seal-spotting trips along the coast to Fairlight are a real delight.
